Cortijo Arroyo Medina - Places to Visit
These wonderful places to visit are all under an hour's drive away from Arroyo Medina, with the exception of the fabulous Lake Negratin (75 minutes) and Granada (2 hours). Velez Rubio Unspoilt town with magnificent church Velez Blanco Typical pueblo blanco with magnificent hilltop palace. The Countryside The area is a diverse mix of mountain ranges, lush valleys and arid river beds (ramblas). Calar Alto Europe's largest observatory (can be seen on the horizon to the right of the covered terrace). Los Mila A former mining town - now a ghost town. Hidden in a mountain valley. A fascinating place to visit. Tabernas Desert Europe's only desert. Many films have been made here, including Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Magnificent Seven and Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns etc. Albox A busy market town serving the local marble industry. Huge market every Tuesday morning. Great shopping. Cela A village blesses with a thermal lagoon, used since Roman times. The lagoon is surrounded by restaurants. A great place for a Sunday swim followed by your favourite paella. Vera Vera is well known for two things: its ancient bullring and Andalucia's largest nudist beach. It also has a water park. Mojacar Magical pueblo blanco with superb views from the plaza. Reputed to be the birthplace of Walt Disney. Villaricos Quiet fishing village. Popular with scuba divers (you can hire equipment here). Some good fish restaurants. Garrucha Fishing port. Watch the boats come in late afternoon and unload their haul. Lots of fish restaurants selling the day's catch. Lake Negratin Europe's second largest lake with a magnificent backdrop of towering red cliffs. Tempting turquoise water to swim in. Lakeside restaurants, including one with a Roman thermal pool just down the road in Zujar. Beach on the lake, plus another naturist beach. Oria Sleepy rural town with restaurants, bars, banks, 24 hour medical centre and 2 small supermarkets. Desert Springs Top quality desert golf course. Equipment hire available.
